spina
Spina started as an exploration of light and shadow, visibility and concealment. The lamp is designed with two translucent black acrylic-glass sheets held together by a central aluminum spine, which inspired its name, SPINA.
The dark acrylic-glass sheets are arranged in a perpendicular configuration, creating a narrow gap between them that becomes the focal point of the lamp. Light is emitted through this gap and softly filtered through the tinted surfaces, giving off a gentle, atmospheric glow. The darkness of the glass adds a touch of opacity, which creates a sense of depth and a sleek aesthetic.
The aluminum spine that holds the glass sheets together is both a structural support and a defining feature of the design. Its ribbed structure provides stability and introduces a visual rhythm of horizontal and vertical lines. Each rib extends outward, securely holding the glass sheets in place. The contrast between raw aluminum and the glossy glass surfaces emphasizes the interplay between the two materials, adding texture and inviting closer inspection.
The light source is seamlessly integrated into the spine, with embedded LEDs that interact subtly with the materials. The result is a soft, even illumination that enhances the form of the lamp without overwhelming its surroundings. The touch-sensitive control allows for easy adjustments, making SPINA adaptable to various lighting needs and moods.
Our intent was for *SPINA* to transcend its function as mere lighting and instead serve as an object with an architectural presence.
