obra

is an exhibition of the output of an academic and creative exercise entitled GHOSTS, proposed and conducted by BARO (Iván Bravo + Martín Rojas), with student works developed at HEAD – Genève (HES-SO). OBRA is curated by BARO, Emilie Appercé, Matthew Phillips and Gregory Tsantilas in collaboration with Andrea Vogel.

“Obra” means the result of artistic endeavour representing the culmination of a creative process, a work of art. In Spanish, it also means “building under construction.” In BARO’s words, this dual meaning “conditions the way we understand our creative practice in both directions. We understand the process of a work as a work in itself and the artwork as a process in execution. Spatial, material and structural experimentation is a project consummated in Obra, and the results are performative residues of an ongoing process.”

A ghost is the absence of a body in its physical form to be replaced by a representation of its previous spatial presence. On a conceptual level, a ghost supposedly keeps its original character, but the transdimensional expression of its body [the shaped silhouette] usually stands autonomously. Through material experimentation and acts of subversion, the student works on show challenge the relation between objects and their ghosts.
